Kathleen Sweeney

Kathleen Sweeney is a multimedia storyteller working at the intersection of digital art and social change. Video, photography, web and visiting artist projects have been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, Ford Foundation, with residencies at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Cill Rialaig Art Center, Ireland, and Mind and Life Institute Europe. Her artwork has shown internationally at Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie; Walker Art Center; Montgomery Civil Rights Museum and many other national and international venues. The author of Maiden USA: Girl Icons Come of Age, she has published film and cultural criticism at IndieWire, Afterimage, Women's Media Center and Publishing Perspectives served as a consultant to Girls Write Now and Reel Girls. A recent photo essay "Ovary Actions and the Female Body Politic)" explores the role of women and girls leadership in activist movements 2017-2019 including Women's Marches on Washington, DC, Science March, Climate Marches and March for Our Lives.
In addition to her own video art exhibitions and publications in print and online, Kathleen is the founder of WordCityStudio, serving as a creative and strategic communications consultant and digital content producer for documentary filmmakers, authors and non-profits including EcoWatch, Garrison Institute and many renowned Buddhist thought leaders including Matthieu Ricard, Sharon Salzberg, Robert Thurman and the 17th Karmapa.
