Earth Day
Today, April 22, is Earth Day. It’s a good day for gratitude.
Our Earth is extraordinary. It’s beautiful. And alive. And cares for us.
It’s important to express how much we care. One way I care for the Earth is by doing the best I can to live according to the three R’s:
Reduce all consumption
Reuse everything as many times as possible
Recycle more than my share.
It’s a diligent, very personal practice. It is definitely inconvenient. But I really believe it helps.
I hope to inspire others by example: I always pack my own shopping bags; I try to choose the least amount packaging; I save gift paper all year for the next re-wrap season of gifts; and I pick up trash every day, I pick up bottles and cans on the street and in our parks to carry out and to recycle.
I also want to share stories of visionaries I admire. I recently read The Overstory, an amazing work of fiction based on the science of trees and the history of North American forests. Author Richard Powers received the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for this book. Please read!
One of Powers’ characters reminds me of the news segment below. It’s called The Story of Julia Butterfly Hill, The Woman Who Lived in a Tree. It aired Earth Day 2000. I think it’s as relevant today as it was back then. Let me know what you think!
